Some of the best events in life happen from random occurrences. My trip to one of the most sustainable countries in the world is of no exception.

It’s crazy how things like a high school business elective course can spiral later in life into a trip to online business opportunity and trip to Switzerland.

A trip that can now serve as the ultimate opportunity to share with you both the highlights of travelling sustainably, and the benefits that Swiss citizens enjoy by cultivating sustainable development in their lives.

Arriving in Switzerland: A Train Ride to Remember

Lets start with the flight, a long journey via Air Canada, but I was thrilled to be leaving the country again for the first time in a while.

After about 10 hours of flying to Geneva, and another hour or so by train, I was in beautiful Bern, SWZ. One of the most sustainable places on Earth.

Before I get ahead of myself, I have to go back to note the immediately evident conditions of a country that prioritizes sustainability.

Firstly, Switzerland’s rail system is a masterpiece in itself, with many trains running on renewable energy.

The journey wasn’t just eco-friendly; it was incredibly scenic. Rolling green hills, snow-capped mountains, and crystal-clear lakes. Perfect for Holiday Vacations!

It felt like I was seeing the untouched past. Of what the planet looks like without the tint of grey left by negligence and mass industrialization.

The public transport boasted both cleanliness and consideration for the passenger and the environment.

Saving tip: If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland, book a train pass ahead of time. Not only does it save money, but it also contributes to minimizing your carbon footprint.

I found an incredible sustainable travel package that bundled rail passes, eco-friendly accommodation, and city tours!

Arriving in Bern: Accomodation in Old Town, the Heart of Switzerland

Upon arriving in Bern, I was greeted by my friend (who would soon become my elite employee) as they served as my personal tour guide for the week ahead.

As I was guided through the city, I felt an odd mix of being totally adrift yet comfortably familiar.

In the Heart of Old Town, I found my favorite brands, modern versions of popular chain restaurants, and everything you would expect to see in a modern American city.

What made it so especially astounding was the way the cityscape mixed the old with the new.

My friend explained to me how maintenance of the town was planned with sustainable development in mind.

There were set zones and designations for which buildings were to maintain original architecture, were open for commercial development, and areas open to the public.

There were Old Town hotels that prided themselves on sustainability, using solar energy and implementing a zero-waste policy!

Restaurants and convenience stores sourced from local farms, distributed by sustainable means!

Intentional spaces for nature!

The journey had only begun and the setting was already speaking for itself!

Pro tip: I found an incredible sustainable travel package that bundled rail passes, eco-friendly accommodation, and city tours. (More on that later!)

Exploring Swizterland: Sustainable Lifestyle by Foot

Bern’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, a walkable wonderland.

The streets cater to pedestrianism over personal transport. Trains, trams, and the two shoes on your feet will carry you everywhere you need to go!

The Zytglogge is Bern Cathedral’s central clock tower, located in a route that encourages visitors to walk or cycle, reducing the need for motor vehicles.

Old Town serves as a great launch point for those wanting to immerse themselves in the cities culture while having options for the day and minimizing their environmental impact.

There are travel packages that offer day trips that move all around Bern, emphasize eco-tourism and support local conservation efforts.

Thanks to Bern’s extensive bike-sharing system and waterway passages, there are many great ways to explore the city’s rural and urban areas.

When you get tired of walking you can rent a bike, a scooter, or even an inner tube!

Definitely bring comfortable shoes, and outdoor gear!

The Flavors of Bern: How the Experience Blends

One of my favorite things about sustainability is how the prioritization of the quality of natural resources translates into the flavors of the food.

From fine dining to fast food to home cooked meals, I enjoyed due to the courtesy of my friends, its evident that the amazing flavors of Switzerland start at the farm.

Many restaurants emphasize locally sourced, organic ingredients.

Grocery stores are very transparent and critical about the food they serve and where it comes from.

The meal felt more meaningful, knowing that it was prepared with maximum consideration for every process of the meal and minimal environmental impact.

Final Thoughts: Making Sustainable Choices on Your Next Trip

Bern is a city that blends the past with the future—its medieval streets coexist with modern initiatives focused on sustainability.

It is a place you can visit for a great sustainable journey enjoying everything from shopping to tech to nature!

Bern sets an excellent example of how travel can be both enjoyable and environmentally conscious.

As I said goodbye to my friends and boarded the train back to Zurich, I felt not only relaxed but also inspired.

Traveling sustainably doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or convenience, in fact, it often enhances the experience, allowing you to connect more deeply with the places you visit.

If you’re ready to plan your own sustainable adventure to Bern or anywhere else in Switzerland, I recommend checking out some travel packages that not only make your trip easier but also ensure you’re treading lightly on the planet.

Your future self and the Earth will thank you!
