Swiss Excursion – A Journey to Remember

I consider myself an enjoyer of travel, but I must admit, I was not looking forward to the 12+ hour flight to one of the most sustainable countries in the world.

So, I will fast forward you through the Air Canada pre-check, and land you right in the first place you will probably end up flying into Switzerland, Geneva.

Not our destination for this journey, but a great place to explore nonetheless!

We are going to the Old Town of Bern, the de facto capital of the city!

Hop on the train and prepare for about an hour and a half of some of the most beautiful scenery you can lay eyes on.

Pictures nor words do it justice, but the vibrant colors and welcoming atmosphere of the country made the long journey more than worth it.

With many trains running on renewable energies, the Swiss rail system is a testament to their sustainable commitments.

It felt like I was seeing the untouched past, the beauty of Earth, void of mass industrialization.

Arriving in Bern

Upon arriving in Bern, I was greeted by my good friend! Who is undoubtably the cities most knowledgeable tour!

After greeting my elite employee, I was introduced first hand to how sustainability was less of a side initiative in Switzerland, and more of an integral part of the countries history.

As I was guided through the city, I knew I was in a foreign location, but felt comfortably familiar.

Maybe it was the Hogwarts-eque architecture making me feel I was in a wonderland.

Maybe it was the way big name brands such as Nike, Louis Vuitton, and even Burger King seamlessly integrated with local vendors and artisans all within said Hogwarts walls.

Or maybe I was so focused on finding food after the flight, that I didn’t care where I was.

Either way, I will say this! It was extremely evident, that the country had cracked the code on preserving the old, while making space for the new.

In this seemingly ancient town, sustainable planning is the reason a cityscape of modern brands and luxuries can coexist in harmony with century old architecture.

My friend explained to me how the maintaining this balance and dynamic is very intentional, and of high priority for Swiss legislators.

Designated zones in the city for maintaining original architecture, commercial development, and third places for constituents keep a balance as the city develops.

I also noticed many residential buildings utilizing solar energy for their homes.

In this tiny walkable city, the lifestyle and values of sustainable development were evident everywhere.

The journey had only begun and the setting was already speaking for itself.

Exploring Switzerland – Public Transportation and Life on Foot

While Bern was my place of stay, it is not the only place I was fortunate enough to explore.

During my stay, I spent time in Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, and Lucerne.

Bouncing from shopping districts to intimate neighborhoods, I found myself a bit charmed by all the overwhelming ways the Swiss government invested in the quality of life of their citizens.

The streets cater to pedestrianism over personal transport in every major city. Trains, trams, and your two feet can take you anywhere you need to be in the major cities.

You will have more of an issue searching for a piece of trash on the ground than a reason to need a car.

Thanks to Bern’s extensive bike-sharing system, waterway passages, and multi level structure, there are so many sights worth seeing on foot.

Even if you don’t have a specific destination in mind, it’s so worth it to go out and get lost in the beauty of it all.

When you get tired of walking you can rent a bike, a scooter, or even an inner tube!

Preserving the Past & Future – Sustainable Development by Design – Architecture & Nature

The Swiss government is dedicated to preserving the sustainability of its architecture and public spaces.

The government encourages tourism to natural sites via legislative protocol, environmental policies and innovative urban planning.

Hikes to glacial springs, high speed sleds, and animal interactions, the country has left plenty of its natural elements to be admired.

The Experience of a Lifetime Awaits

In the cities, energy-efficient building codes are enforced and favor materials with low environmental impact.

Green roofs, solar panels, and advanced insulation techniques. Every option is explored.

Historical buildings are carefully renovated to maintain cultural heritage while adhering to modern sustainability and safety standards.

Car-free zones reduce pollution and protect biodiversity, grocery stores double as recycling centers, and educational institutions house community micro gardens.

They truly exemplify resourcefulness, functionality, and sustainability across all the facets of regular life.

There are many ways to indulge in the splendor of the countries sustainable efforts. My personal favorite? The food!

From Farm to Table – Taste the Benefits of Sustainable Blends

If you’re new to me or the blog, there’s one thing you should know.

I am the type of person who will make a single restaurant the focal point of the whole trip.

I am in a secret competition to be the worlds biggest foodie.

As a sustainable advocate, one of my FAVORITE experiences is when the you can TASTE the quality difference of food in a country that treats it’s farmers well.

Yes, I promise you true sustainability efforts can translate all the way down to the flavors of the food on your plate.

Even the grocery stores are transparent about the food they sell and where it comes from.

From fine dining to fast food to home cooked meals I enjoyed due to the courtesy of my friends, its evident that the amazing flavors of Switzerland start at the farm.

Locally sourced ingredients, walkable cities, and empowered third spaces, a recipe for success that are only a few of the reasons why many Swiss citizens, are PROUD TO BE SWISS.

Final Thoughts: Making Sustainable Choices on Your Next Trip

Switzerland is a country that understands and applies the best of both worlds in all they do.

Medieval streets coexist with modern initiatives focused on sustainability.

A shopping paradise or an oasis for escape, the tranquility that Switzerland offers might have you ready to apply for your citizenship upon landing!

I am more than grateful to my friends for giving me the local taste of life in Bern.

The country as a whole sets an excellent example of how travel can be both enjoyable and environmentally conscious.

As I said goodbye to my friends and boarded the train back to Geneva, I felt not only relaxed but also inspired.
